Sompura Infuses Life into Dying Art

Sompura Art Gallery opposite Vile Parle Station (E) has an interesting collection of statues & statuettes, costing from Rs. 5 to Rs. 5,000. The figures are made of various types of stones, marble, cement, wood and paper-pulp for decorating the home gifting friends and for those interested in sculptures.
Being the only showroom of its type in the suburbs the gallery attracts many well-known persons of various fields, businessmen and art-lovers. These statues are also taken for film shootings and dramas.
Also available here are small temples more popularly known as 'Dev Gavax' or 'Mini Temple' for statues of gods & goddess at home people now prefer durable mini temple of stone to those made of wood for their flats and these temples are also supplied to Kutch & Saurashtra.
Hariprasad Sompura who is chairman of Shilp Academy has himself also constructed many challenging temples like Mahalaxmi Temple at Dahanu where 58 pillar (Stambha) or ground floor were restored without disturbing the first floor, the traditional Brahma Mandir of this century at Bardoli & the covering temple at Tulsishyam. Besides he has also constructed nearly 37 small & bin temples belonging to a various religions & castes and of various styles.
Hariprasad Sompura has appeared on many programmes on TV and radio for talks on temple architecture. He has also written more than 5,000 articles on sculpture in various magazines.
His gallery at Parle is a venture to infuse new life to this dying art.
